A Smile Changes Everything
Monday, February 1, 2010 at 10:54AM Over the summer I worked at a gift shop in the hospital. Everyday when people came in, they would hardly say hello or even glance over. One by one they would shuffle in and throw their candy or card onto the counter and be eager to get their change. One morning a man and his wife came in and kept questioning and complaining about the lack of baby items. They kept yelling at one another, and eventually left. At that point I was ready to quit, go home and have a normal summer like all of my other friends.
It was at that moment when a older lady came in to buy a book. She was all smiles when she looked at me. I could already tell she had a warm and loving heart. She said her husband was in the hospital and she needed a book to help the worry and waiting. She brought her book up to me, looked me in the eyes, and told me that I looked like I had a stressful morning. I smiled and agreed. I gave her the book back and she patted my hand and said she would be praying for me, and that my summer and time in the gift shop turned out well. I could already feel tears in my eyes and I looked at her, trying not to cry, and said thank you and that her husband would be in my thoughts and prayers. As she walked away, I couldn’t even imagine what was going through her mind. All I knew was that she resembled an angel, and though she had to be going through a lot of pain and stress, she took the time to tell me I’d be in her prayers, even while her husband was in the hospital.
I threw all of the other troubles from that day out of my mind, and just smiled at everyone who came in, thanking God for sending that older lady into the little gift shop. I will never forget the few minutes I had with the her. In just two minutes I had learned a big lesson. There are so many other things and people to worry about. It is just a waste of time to get angry and stressed about something that happened in the past. You have to look ahead into the future, and also ask yourself who am I going to help and smile at today? Now every time I have a bad day, I try to go and make someone else’s day the best it can be.
To the lady who came into the gift shop: Thank You! You helped me in many ways and made a big impact in my life. MAY GOD BLESS YOU!
